Calling all Sandy Denny fans! There’s a strictly limited edition 19 CD box set on its way. 11 of the CDs feature Sandy’s studio recordings with Alex Campbell, Johnny Silvo, Fotheringay, Strawbs, Fairport Convention and solo with additional content; outtakes, demos and live recordings. As if that weren’t enough, there are also 8 CDs of bonus material; unreleased songs, demos, unreleased BBC recordings, alternate takes, live recordings, acoustic versions, and rare radio interviews. I bought this fantastic box set from Amazon - fantastic except for the fact that disc 18 doesn’t work ... I seem to be not the only one who forked out an arm and a leg for something that’s faulty. Anyone had any joy in rectifying their problem ? Is there a successful way of contacting Island ? Anyone know ?

Whishaw on 08/03/2012 at 20:08

SHOULD I PAY £999.00 FOR THIS?

GaryMP on 16/12/2011 at 17:02

Bought a copy in Melbourne Australia.  While still in it’s original seal, unfortunately the box was missing the extras…it only had the CD’s and book.  Retailer was great about it, but could only offer a refund because he couldn’t source another copy.  Decided to keep the set instead so I could keep enjoying the music.

grickard on 13/03/2011 at 01:52

Adding to the comments regarding the disparity between the total excellence of the music and the somewhat slipshod manufacturing quality of the set, mine arrived with CD#1 missing completely! This is obviously hugely disappointing and frustrating especially since the online retailer I purchased it from has been completely unhelpful in resolving the matter now it seems the set has sold out and is deleted (permanently?). If I knew there was going to be a re-press later in 2011 then I’d get a refund and re-purchase when it comes out again but without any knowledge of this possibility I’m more than a little stumped since I want to keep the 95% of the set I’ve got but would like CD#1 to get to 100% !

TCH on 25/01/2011 at 17:00

received this in the USA from amazon.uk.  in addition to issues with the fragility of the packaging, i find that my copy of the book is bound upside down :-((  pages and cover are oriented oppositely.

i wonder if there’s any remedy offered for this…?

ldb on 01/01/2011 at 05:18

i ordered the sandy denny set end of november 2010 wth shipment for the usa..

i saw the order in the tracking information a couple of weeks ago but now don’t see any reference to my order or whether it has been shipped out or when shipment is expected in the States

any idea on how long the shipment process takes and is there any phone contact?

I was fortunate to see “the Lady” in concert a couple of times and I am looking forward to hear this 19 disc set..

fairport4 on 13/12/2010 at 17:31

I have to agree.  The musical content is superb but the packaging (ie the plastic tray holding the CDs inside the box) is a disaster.  Mine arrived broken in several places.  This really is not good enough for such a ‘lavishly packaged’ product. This detracts enormously from the whole experience, especially given the money paid.  Sending it back may not help as the tray is likely to be damaged in transit.  Island/Universal really should offer a solution to music fans who have invested in the box.

glynster on 30/11/2010 at 09:08

Yes, big disappointment with the packaging.
The box is too big: it could have been half the width if only the CDs were arranged in 4 colums rather than 2.
The digipacks are badly made as they don’t close.
Worse of all, the tray that holds the CDs is of incredibly poor quality and it breaks easily. Most people (including me) actually found it already cracked the moment they opened the box set.
It is a real pity as this is otherwise a stunning release.
Island or Universal, could you please at least provide all the buyers with a replacement tray (ideally of better quality)?
A lot of customers have been returning their set to the shops where they got it from.

bariplini on 27/11/2010 at 21:05

There has been some disappointment on the very poor quality of the internal packaging of the box set which breaks up in transit.  Is there anything Island can do to arrange a remedy?  This may Universal’s problem, but Island has done us proud in safeguarding Sandy’s music over the years and we would really like your help please.

CJ on 27/11/2010 at 16:44

Apologies to all concerned - In my haste to check out the CD content I’m ashamed to say that I hadn’t really noticed that all the track information is within the accompanying book. It is now officially raised from practically perfect to perfect. Can’t wait for the next one!

lobster on 23/11/2010 at 08:26

Hello Lobster.
Mine arrived today also (at last!) and I have only had a chance to glance through it, but I am more than happy to have been left waiting. I think it is one of the most beautifully packaged box sets I have purchased. I have over 100 by the way so I think I should know!!
I am going to sit down tomorrow and go through all the unreleased tracks and expect to be equally pleased.
The back of the book seems to have a lot of info and inside the book also has info on the tracks, so get reading! And most of all, enjoy!! A truly fitting tribute to the late great Lady.

colm47 on 23/11/2010 at 00:37

My box arrived this morning. The packaging and bits ‘n’ bobs that come with it are very nice but I am alone in thinking that the info regarding the individual tracks, particularly the demos and stuff is a bit lacking. I don’t know about anybody else but I quite like to know when and where things were recorded and I like to read about it on the cover of the disc that I’m listening to. I’m sure that most of this information is available ‘cos much of it was on A Boxful Of Treasures. Don’t like to nit-pick but I feel that with just a little more thought this box would have been practically perfect.

lobster on 22/11/2010 at 20:51

Why are we being told here that this set is ‘out now’ when it patently isn’t?

Why do I have to go elsewhere for release date information?

Why was my credit card debited six weeks ago and not just prior to despatch?

Why did I bother ordering direct from Island?

Poor service all round - for some reason (probably nostalgic) I expected better from this company.

lobster on 03/11/2010 at 15:11

According to those online retailers I mentioned before, the box set is now delayed yet again for another week until the 22nd of November. When will it ever be released?!?
I see it reviewed in 2 of my favourite monthly music magazines so the lucky critics there have got their copies! Probably free too!
Does anyone from Island update this website?

colm47 on 01/11/2010 at 16:24

Hi Colm, many thanks for your comment. I received an e-mail from Sandbag yesterday (11 October) and have replied. Still not happy about having to wait another month for the set though !! Thanks again for your comment.

Quomann on 12/10/2010 at 00:52

Quomann, if you email Sandbag (the people handling the order!) with your order number re the printed artwork, they will hopefully get back to you.
I mailed them about it and they did get back to me. If you don’t reply to them they stick on the purchasers name on the artwork.
You should have heard from them by now though I would think.
I hope this helps.

colm47 on 05/10/2010 at 21:52

I’d also be very interested to know when this set is coming as I have ordered the deluxe edition and have not had any contact regarding the signed artwork.

Quomann on 01/10/2010 at 21:16

Yesterday, the release date was 01/11/10 in all places ie all the big online shops. I will not mention them as do not want to give free ads but you can guess which ones I mean.
Anyway, today I see the release date has changed again to 08/11/10.
Is there anyone from Island’s staff looking at this Island Records site that knows the official release date for this box set?
Is it going to change again tomorrow? Can we have a firm solid release date please? Is that too much to ask?

colm47 on 24/09/2010 at 16:53

What is the official release date for this boxset?
Is it 01/11/2010 , as stated in lots of places, or 04/10/10, as stated in other places?
I have already ordered the Premium Box through Island and would love to know which date is correct.
As it is I am wishing the Autumn away and Autumn is my favourite season!

colm47 on 10/09/2010 at 16:54

Any one have any idea if the individual albums will contain booklets with liner notes and lyrics?  A 72-page book doesn’t seem like much information for a 19-cd collection!

pghmusiclover on 30/08/2010 at 12:27

Fantastic!  I hope the version of Full Moon with the Dave Swarbrick violin solo will be on this (as well as the Acker Bilk version).  I’d also like to hear the live Fairport version of Down Where The Drunkards Roll (did Sandy sing bvs with Trevor on this?)

THE MUSIC WORLD COMES TOGETHER TO LAUNCH MUSIC MATTERS

THE MUSIC WORLD COMES TOGETHER TO LAUNCH MUSIC MATTERS

Music Matters is a collective effort by artists and all those who work in and around music to remind listeners of its enduring value. People from across the industry are coming together for the first time, to highlight the profound value of music and to educate consumers on how to identify legitimate music services.

Allowing the music to speak for itself, Music Matters comprises a series of short animated films about inspirational artists who’ve dedicated their lives to music and helped shape our cultural landscape.

The films, including the stories of artists such as Sigur Ros, the Fron Choir, Blind Willie Johnson, The Jam, John Martyn, Nick Cave and Kate Bush, can be found on supporting artist and organisation websites, with more films to be rolled out later in the year.

A Music Matters trust mark will be launched to help audiences make the ethical choice when looking for new music. The trust mark is a widespread certification scheme which identifies legitimate music services, and will be displayed by leading music retailers.

The Music Matters website, www.whymusicmatters.org, hosts all of the films as well as advice on how to identify legitimate music sites. Happy ethical listening, Islanders!

YUSUF/CAT STEVENS ANNOUNCES UK TOUR 25/09/09

YUSUF/CAT STEVENS ANNOUNCES UK TOUR 25/09/09

GUESS I’LL TAKE MY TIME TOUR

First Tour Since 1976 for Elusive Yusuf (Cat Stevens)

After quite an extraordinary break of 33 years, Yusuf, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens, strolls back on the stage. It’s been a long wait, and fans are about to see why. As one would expect from such an innovative and unpredictable artist it’s not a tour in the usual sense.

The legendary singer/songwriter is expected to offer audiences a taste of his timeless hits, like Wild World, Father & Son and First Cut Is The Deepest, as well as music from his highly acclaimed new albums, An Other Cup and Roadsinger. Expanding the music concert with his return to the acoustic guitar, Yusuf will present a preview of the latest step on his lifelong voyage. Incorporating an exciting mix of concert and musical storytelling, Yusuf’s unique performance will also showcase an exclusive debut of the new musical, Moonshadow.

“My songs always told a story, so it’s natural for me to extend that into a stage musical form.” Yusuf said. “It’s taken a long time to arrive, but it’s always been a dream of mine to write a musical. Growing up in the West End of London, surrounded by theatres and shows, obviously left a strong impression on me. I originally wanted to be a composer, not a pop star.” Strange how it’s taken almost a lifetime, but it had to – the story is somewhat a metaphorical mirror of my own journey, so I suppose it had to wait to reach where I am today.”

Arguably the greatest singer/songwriter to come out of the UK and one with a truly global following, Yusuf has certainly taken his time with these dates. He last toured with his Majikat shows in 1976, apart from a couple of intimate performances – events such as his incredible performance for Island Records’ 50th celebrations at Shepherds Bush Empire in May where U2 paid respects and became his support act! The reception obviously inspired him. This usually retiring performer is now primed to embark on another selective tour of UK and Ireland.

The four city tour will commence in Dublin and continue to Birmingham, Liverpool and end in London at the Royal Albert Hall.

November 15 – Dublin The O2
November 23 – Birmingham NIA
December 5 – Liverpool Echo Arena
December 8 – London Royal Albert Hall

Tickets are priced at £50/£60 & £75. Royal Albert Hall tickets are £45-£100 and are on sale now.

Tickets are available from www.aeglive.co.uk or on 08444 775 775.

The Very Best of Cat Stevens is out now on Island Records and available to purchase here on island50.com by clicking here.

A majestic debut album from Florence and her band “The Machine”.
Their album launch performance at the Rivoli Ballrooms was simply stunning and now with five accomplished musicians as her permanent Machine she can only go from strength to strength .You cannot compare this act with Amy, Duffy, Lily , Pixie or Adele who are merely solo singers backed by anonymous session men, whereas Florence is the fantastic front singer for what is surely the freshest new act of this century the like of which we have not seen since   the Pretenders or Blondie.
She is a great singer , a great songwriter and what a band, what a drummer!
Check them out.
